Pegcity Steppers began with a simple idea, staying active while staying connected.
Founded by Shana Goodridge, Pegcity Steppers held its very first meetup on January 5, 2020, with just five people. What started as a small group of young professionals looking for ways to remain active during Winnipeg’s long and challenging winter months quickly became something much bigger.
For many of the founding members, the group was about more than fitness. Several members were newcomers to Canada and were still adjusting to the harsh winter climate. Heading outdoors alone in freezing temperatures could feel intimidating, but coming together as a group created motivation, accountability, and a sense of comfort. Pegcity Steppers became a space where people could not only prioritize their health and wellness, but also stay connected, build friendships, and meet new people within the community.
Through every walk, jog, and run, the group created an environment rooted in encouragement, consistency, and support. Members motivated one another to keep showing up not just for fitness goals, but for their overall well-being.
As the group evolved, so did our ambitions and impact. What began with five people has grown into a vibrant community of more than 80 runners and walkers of varying paces, backgrounds, and abilities.
Along the way, we expanded beyond weekly meetups to host community wellness initiatives, group events, and partnerships that encourage healthier and more connected communities. It was so well received by the community and we wanted to keep going and keep doing more. Therefore, to further grow our reach and deepen our impact, we established ourselves as a not-for-profit organization. This next chapter has allowed us to strengthen community programming, create meaningful corporate partnerships, support workplace wellness initiatives, and provide more opportunities for people of all backgrounds and fitness levels to stay active and connected. Today, we continue to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment where individuals can improve their physical health, strengthen their mental wellness, and build lasting relationships through movement and community.
